Mobility is about independence and living life on your own terms. For wheelchair users, having a mobility vehicle can make all the difference in achieving everyday convenience and accessibility.
However, not all vehicles are good for conversion. Selecting the right model is crucial for a secure and dependable driving experience. This brings us to the central question for anyone considering a conversion: Which models make for safe wheelchair conversion vehicles? Find the perfect fit for your needs by exploring the benefits of trucks and SUVs, essential safety features to consider, and the standout models at ATC Mobility.
Vans are the common choice for wheelchair-accessible conversions given the interior space allotted for the rider to maneuver. However, trucks and SUVs are popular, too, and for good reason! These vehicles offer a range of benefits that make them safer and more versatile for wheelchair users.
A truck has a strong chassis and much more ground clearance than a van, which often loses clearance as a result of the conversion. As a result, negotiating relatively simple obstacles like speed bumps can cause damage to a converted van.
SUVs bring a unique combination of spacious interiors and advanced safety features. Compared to vans, SUVs and trucks offer superior stability on and off-road, thanks to their advanced suspension systems, 4WD options, and exceptional handling capabilities.
From a lifestyle perspective, these vehicles are more versatile. Whether you are navigating city streets or taking off-road adventures, you can find the truck or SUV that suits your needs.
Safety is paramount when converting a wheelchair-accessible truck or SUV. Here are some safety features to think about.
Many modern trucks and SUVs have ADAS, like lane-keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. These systems can prevent accidents by alerting drivers to potential hazards or taking corrective action when necessary. When you’re traveling in an adapted vehicle, advanced driver assistance systems can keep you safe.
Not all vehicles have the same crash safety ratings. Look for SUVs or trucks that have high crash test ratings. This information provides insight into how a vehicle performs in various collision scenarios. Selecting a model with good crash testing results can help you narrow down your options and maximize your safety on the road.
A durable chassis means the vehicle can handle the structural reinforcements that come with conversions. For instance, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra excel in this area, offering durability that can withstand the necessary modifications for a wheelchair lift installation.
Stability is vital for converted vehicles, particularly for those carrying mobility equipment. Electronic stability control (ESC) and advanced suspension systems create a smoother, safer ride. SUVs have lower centers of gravity than most vans, so they shine in stability and handling.
ATC Mobility’s Wheelchair Converted TrucksIf you are leaning toward a truck for wheelchair conversion, the models below are excellent choices. The way these vehicles are manufactured and the materials they use makes them the best and safest vehicles for conversion. For example, the strength of the vehicle floor to support the weight of the lift, wheelchair, and rider is essential to provide smooth entry and exit, and also maintain the highest safety standards in the mobility space.
The Chevrolet Silverado is strong and adaptable, making it a top pick for wheelchair-accessible conversions. Its spacious cabin and sturdy frame give you plenty of room for modifications without compromising safety or comfort. The Silverado’s impressive towing capacity also supports external equipment or storage solutions.
Another leading option is the GMC Sierra. The Sierra combines ruggedness with safety features, such as lane change alerts and forward collision warnings. Its solid build ensures stability even with added modifications, making it a safe and reliable option for wheelchair users.
For anyone considering a wheelchair-accessible SUV, ATC Mobility’s selection of models offers outstanding safety and comfort features.
The GMC Yukon XL is a popular choice for wheelchair conversions due to its spacious interior and advanced safety technology. It has a lot of cargo space and a strong build, so the Yukon XL provides plenty of room for passengers. And since the conversion itself doesn’t compromise seating, you still maintain three rows of seating, up to 8 people. Meanwhile, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts add safety on every trip, whether you’re running errands or road tripping.
The Chevrolet Suburban is another fantastic wheelchair-accessible SUV. Its roomy design and high crash test ratings make it a favorite among families and individuals alike. The Suburban has adaptive cruise control and stability control systems for a smooth and safe ride. This makes it suitable for accommodating wheelchair lifts while maintaining handling.
Factors To Keep in Mind When Choosing a Vehicle for ConversionBefore committing to a model, assess your personal needs and preferences. Here are some factors to keep in mind:
Think about how you’ll be using your vehicle. Are you planning to take long road trips, or will you mainly use the vehicle for city driving? Do you work at a construction site and seek a vehicle to help perform your job? Are you a fan of off-roading and enjoy camping and fishing? Your lifestyle will determine whether a truck or SUV best suits your needs. Also, the type of climate you live and work in and the weather you need to overcome can help influence your decision. Heavy rain or snowfall in winter months makes commuting particularly challenging, so consider a 4WD option if available.
A large vehicle offers ample space for additional passengers, and storage, making it ideal for people or families with active lifestyles. On the other hand, a compact vehicle may be perfect for navigating city streets while meeting your accessibility needs. Selecting the size that fits your daily routine ensures a seamless and enjoyable driving experience.
Conversions come with additional costs, so it’s important to factor them into your budget. Look into upfront costs, maintenance expenses, and financing options to ensure your choice aligns with your financial plan.
